Tips for how to prepare your entire family's wardrobe for a family photography session
Planning outfits for your family photos can feel like a daunting task—but it doesn’t have to be! The right clothing choices can elevate your session, help you feel more confident, and make your images feel cohesive and timeless. Whether you’re prepping for fall portraits, a spring mini session, or a cozy in-home lifestyle shoot, here’s a helpful guide from your local Raleigh family photographer on what to wear (and what to avoid).
To make things even easier, I provide all of my clients with a comprehensive styling tool before their session. It includes outfit inspiration, color palette suggestions, and tips for dressing the whole family in a way that feels cohesive while considering my editing style. Whether you love planning outfits or feel totally overwhelmed by it, my styling guide takes the guesswork out of what to wear—so you can focus on what really matters: showing up and enjoying your time together.

1. Start with a Color Palette
Rather than matching exactly, aim to coordinate with a soft color palette of 3–4 tones. Neutrals like cream, beige, sage, navy, or dusty rose work beautifully. If you're planning a seasonal session, draw inspiration from nature—think warm earth tones and neutrals.

2. Mix Textures and Layers
Adding texture through knits, denim, linen, or lace adds depth to your photos. Layers like cardigans, vests, or scarves not only add visual interest but can also be easily removed to switch up the look mid-session.

3. Keep Comfort in Mind (Especially for Kids)
Everyone photographs better when they feel good. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or overly fussy—especially for little ones. Let kids wear something they can move and play in without constant readjusting.

4. Avoid Distracting Logos and Bold Patterns
Stick to solids or subtle patterns. Large logos, neon colors, and busy prints can draw attention away from your faces and the connection you're there to capture.
5. Dress for the Location & Season
Is your session in a field, at the beach, or snuggled up in your home? Consider the setting when choosing outfits so your clothing feels natural and appropriate. Barefoot at the beach? Yes! Heels in a grassy field? Maybe not so much.

6. Think About the End Result
Are you planning to hang your photos in your living room? Display them in a holiday card? Keep the colors and vibe of your home décor in mind if you want everything to feel cohesive when the images are printed.

Remember, the most important thing is capturing your family's connection—not creating a perfect fashion spread. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence shows. Choose clothes that feel like you, and let the joy and love of your family do the rest.
If you’re looking for a Raleigh family photographer to guide you through the process and create images full of warmth and connection, I’d love to hear from you! I’m always happy to offer styling help or share inspiration boards as we plan your session.
