One of the most common questions expecting parents ask is: when should newborn photos be taken?

Traditionally, newborn photography sessions are scheduled within the first 7–10 days after a baby is born. During this time babies tend to sleep deeply and can be gently posed in the classic curled newborn positions you often see in studio photography. While those early sessions can be beautiful, the reality is that the first week or two with a new baby can also feel overwhelming. Many families are still adjusting to a brand new routine, recovering from birth, and getting very little sleep.

Because of this, my approach to newborn photography is a little different.

As a Raleigh newborn photographer, I photograph babies when they are around 2–4 weeks old, creating what I call Nearly Newborn Sessions — relaxed, in-home sessions designed to capture the connection between your family and your new baby.

When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos?

The best time to schedule newborn photos is actually during pregnancy, typically in your second trimester.

Most newborn photographers only take a limited number of sessions each month. Booking early allows us to reserve space on my calendar based on your estimated due date, rather than choosing a fixed date before your baby arrives.

Many families choose to book newborn photos at the same time they schedule their maternity photography session, which allows us to document both pregnancy and those first weeks with your baby.

A Different Approach to Newborn Photography

Most newborn photography takes place within the first week after birth.

While that timing works well for posed newborn sessions, I’ve found that many families feel more comfortable waiting just a little longer. It is because of this that my sessions typically take place when babies are between 2–4 weeks old, which I refer to as Nearly Newborn Sessions.

By this time, many parents have had a chance to settle into their new routine at home, making the session feel more relaxed and natural. Instead of focusing on posed newborn images, these sessions capture the connection between parents, siblings, and their newest family member.

What to Expect From an In-Home Newborn Session

Nearly newborn sessions are designed to feel more like an intimate family session in your home. Rather than using props or studio setups, we focus on natural moments and interactions between your family and your baby.

These sessions typically include:

• Snuggles on the couch or nursery chair

• Parents holding and comforting their baby

• Siblings meeting or interacting with the newest member of the family

• Quiet moments that reflect what life truly feels like during those first weeks

Reasons Why I Photograph Babies at 2–4 Weeks Old

Photographing babies a few weeks after birth offers several advantages for many families.

By this point:

• Parents often feel more comfortable in front of the camera

• Families have begun settling into their new routine

• Babies are still tiny, but often more alert and expressive

• The overall experience feels calmer and less rushed

Waiting a few weeks allows us to capture this season in a way that feels authentic and relaxed, rather than trying to fit photography into the earliest days of recovery and adjustment.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?

If you’re expecting and considering newborn photos, the best time to reach out is during your second trimester. Booking early ensures we can reserve space around your due date and plan for your session once baby arrives.

My newborn sessions take place in your home, are photographed on weekends only, and are typically scheduled around midday when natural light is strongest.
