If you're thinking about scheduling family photos, one of the most important questions is also one of the easiest to overlook: when should you actually book?

For most families, earlier is better.

My calendar is typically booked 2–3 months in advance, especially during popular seasons like fall. That means waiting until the month you want photos can make it much harder to find a date that works for your family. Booking early gives you more flexibility with timing, location, and wardrobe planning—and it also takes one more thing off your plate.

Family Photo Sessions Are Best Booked 2–3 Months in Advance

For most family sessions, I recommend reaching out 2–3 months before you hope to have your photos taken.

That timeline gives you the best chance of securing:

  • A date that works with your family's schedule
  • Your preferred season
  • A location you love
  • Enough time to plan outfits without rushing
  • A session date that works around vacations, school events, and busy weekends

Because I only take a limited number of sessions, my calendar often fills well before the actual session month.

If you're already thinking about photos, that's usually a good sign that it's time to start planning.

Fall Family Photos Should Be Booked Even Earlier

Fall is by far one of the most popular times of year for family photography.

The temperatures are cooler, the light is beautiful, and many families are also thinking ahead to holiday cards and gifts. Because demand is so high, fall dates tend to fill especially quickly. If you know you want fall family photos, I would recommend watching for calendar releases as early as possible rather than waiting until September or October to start looking.

My email list receives 48-hour first access whenever I release new calendar quarters, which gives returning and interested clients the best chance to reserve the dates they want before availability opens more broadly.

Holiday Card Sessions Need Extra Planning Time

If you're hoping to use your family photos for holiday cards, timing matters even more.

You'll need to leave enough time for:

  • The photo session itself
  • Gallery delivery
  • Selecting your favorite images
  • Designing and ordering cards
  • Shipping and mailing

For that reason, I recommend scheduling holiday-card sessions well before the holiday rush. Late September through early November is usually the most practical window, depending on when you want cards in the mail.

Booking early helps ensure you aren't scrambling at the last minute.

Maternity Sessions Should Be Reserved During Pregnancy, Not at the Last Minute

Maternity sessions require a little more planning because there is a smaller window when most people feel comfortable and still have a clearly visible bump.

Rather than waiting until the final few weeks of pregnancy, I recommend reaching out earlier so we can choose a session date that works with your due date and calendar.

Booking ahead also gives you more time to plan wardrobe and location without feeling rushed.

If you're deciding when to schedule maternity photos, booking a few months in advance is usually ideal.

Newborn Sessions Are Best Planned Before Baby Arrives

Newborn photography is another area where planning ahead makes a big difference.

For my Nearly Newborn sessions, I schedule the session 2–4 weeks from your due date, rather than waiting until after baby arrives.

Because I work full-time and photograph sessions on weekends, I am not able to offer unlimited flexibility if a baby arrives early or late. Planning around the due date gives families a realistic window while still keeping the session relaxed and low-pressure.

These sessions are especially well suited for families who care less about capturing baby in the first few days and more about documenting this new season once everyone has had a little time to settle in.

Milestone Sessions Are Easier to Plan When You Work Backward

For birthdays, first-year milestones, or other meaningful ages, it helps to work backward from the date you want the photos. For example, if you're hoping to have photos taken near a first birthday, don't wait until that month to reach out.

Start planning a few months ahead so you have time to:

  • Choose the right session date
  • Coordinate outfits
  • Avoid schedule conflicts
  • Build in a little flexibility if weather becomes an issue

This is especially important if your milestone falls during a busy season.

Booking Early Gives You More Than Just a Better Date

Booking early isn't only about availability. It also makes the entire experience feel calmer.

When your session is already reserved, you have time to think through the details without feeling rushed. You can make thoughtful decisions about:

That preparation often leads to a more relaxed session overall.

If You Have a Specific Season in Mind, Don't Wait

Some families are flexible and simply want photos sometime during the year. Others have a very specific vision.

Maybe you love fall.

Maybe spring flowers are more your style.

Maybe you want summer photos while school is out.

If the season matters to you, it's worth booking as soon as those dates are released. The more specific your preferences are, the earlier I recommend reaching out.

The Best Way to Get First Access to New Dates

Because my calendar typically fills 2–3 months ahead, the easiest way to get first access to new availability is through my email list.

Subscribers receive a 48-hour head start whenever I release a new calendar quarter. That means you get the first opportunity to choose from the newest weekend dates before they're opened more widely.

If you know you want family photos in an upcoming season, joining the list is one of the easiest ways to avoid missing the date you want.

Planning Your Raleigh Family Photo Session

The simplest rule is this: if you're starting to think about family photos, it's probably not too early to reach out.

For most sessions, planning 2–3 months ahead gives you the best combination of availability and flexibility. For fall, holiday cards, maternity, newborn, and milestone sessions, earlier is even better.

As a Raleigh family photographer, I help families plan everything from timing and location to wardrobe and session preparation so the entire experience feels easy from start to finish.
